- Awarded the Purple Heart for wounds suffered while serving the 35th Infantry Division during the Argonne Offensive of World War I, Gen. Dunkley served his country as an infantryman for 42 years. Enlisting as a private at Lawrence, he served as a sergeant with Gen. Pershing's command during the Mexican Border Campaign.
Commissioned in the Kansas Army National Guard in 1920 and recalled to active duty just before World War II, he was task force commander of the first operation of the war in the western Aleutians. His regimented command in Europe spearheaded the crossing of the Danube with Gen. Patton's third Army after fighting through France and Austria. Following the Allied victory in Europe, Col. Dunkley returned with Gen. Eisenhower to tour the United States in June of 1945.
Recalled to active duty again in 1949, Col. Dunkley served as a member of the Army General Staff during the Korean Conflict. He was promoted to brigadier general in 1953. He was elected in 1954 as the first president of the National Guard Association of Kansas. Following three terms as president of the association, he retired from the 35th Infantry Division in May of 1957.
