At the age of 31 he was mustered into service as a private on May 9, 1898 and served as a Scout from April 14 to June 22, 1899. On June 30, 1899 he was discharged from the Kansas Volunteers to become a member of the United States Volunteers.

According to Military Records his medal was issued on March 26, 1902. He died July 10, 1902 however his cause of death and burial place are unknown.

Major General Funston, a former Inductee of the Hall of Fame and member of the Kansas National Guard, recounted in his book, Memories of Two Wars, page 248, gave his first hand account of John Huntsman's valor: "In the mean time a raft was noticed moored to the opposite bank of the stream about eight yards below the trench that was fighting Major Bell's detachment. (The namesake of Bell Hall at Ft. Leavenworth) It would be necessary to swim the stream the get it, and I called for volunteers to do the work. Lieutenant Hardy, Trumpeter Barshfield, Corporal Drysdale… and Privates Huntsman and Willey stripped off their clothing and plunged over the bank into the stream. They swam across, got the raft, and towed it to our side. It was a gallant piece of work well done. During this time the fieldpiece, the Colt gun, and company D were pounding the near-by trench with great vigor, while the Pennsylvania Company was handling another trench a little farther up-upstream… As soon as the raft reached our side I got on it with Lieutenant Hopkins and twenty-one men of Company C and we poled it to the other bank." Inducted into the Kansas National Guard Hall of Fame, November 2007.
