Major General GREGORY B. GARDNER

Major General Gregory B. Gardner became The Adjutant General of Kansas on February 10, 1999. As The Adjutant General, he guides the preparation of 8,500 Kansas Army and Air National Guard citizen soldiers and airmen to respond in times of state or national emergency. As Director of the Division of Emergency Management for Kansas, he directs and coordinates state and local government agencies when emergencies and natural disasters strike in the state.

Major General Gardner entered the Air National Guard as a distinguished graduate of the University of Hawaii Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps in 1976. After completing undergraduate pilot training and F-4 operational training as a distinguished graduate, he served in the Hawaii Air National Guard as an F-4C interceptor and instructor pilot. He completed Squadron Officer’s School as a distinguished graduate in 1982.

In 1983, as Chief, Air National Guard Fighter Exercises and Deployments, he developed and computerized the Air National Guard’s first Three Year Exercise and Deployment Program. As a National Guard Bureau Plans Officer, he designed the Air National Guard’s War Planning Management Information System in 1985. From 1987 to 1991, he served as an F-4D instructor pilot, air-to-air phase manager, and supervisor of flying for the 177th Tactical Fighter Training Squadron, then assisted the unit’s conversion as an F-16 instructor pilot, flight examiner, and flight commander for the squadron’s first F-16 class.

In 1991, as Air National Guard Advisor for Plans and Operations, he advised the Vice Commander and Director of Operations, Headquarters Air Combat Command, on the capabilities, readiness, tasking, training, and integration of Air National Guard Forces in the Total Air Force. Major General Gardner served as Vice Commander for three years before taking command of the 184th Bomb Wing on July 12, 1997. He was the Commander of the 184th Bomb Wing, Kansas Air National Guard, McConnell Air Force Base, Kan., the first B-1B bomber unit in the Air National Guard. The wing supports the Air Force Global Engagement Strategy by operating and maintaining combat ready B-1B bombers capable of employing conventional weapons anywhere on earth, anytime.

Major General Gardner and his wife Kimberly have two children, Gary and Rachel.
