LTG JOE NICKELL
Kansas' 28th Adjutant General
April 21, 1951 - December 31, 1972

Lieutenant General Joe Nickell served as the Adjutant General of Kansas for more than 21 years, culminating an illustrious career as state legislator, lawyer, newspaperman, radio commentator, photographer, historian and soldier.

His inspired leadership while Adjutant General of Kansas resulted in the construction of 58 new Army National Guard Armories throughout Kansas. Two facilities are dedicated in his name; Nickell Memorial Armory in Topeka, and Nickell Barracks in Salina.

In recognition of his contributions and value of service to the State of Kansas, he was promoted to Lieutenant General in July of 1970, making him the only Adjutant General of Kansas to attain that rank.

A military career spanning 58 years of service to the State of Kansas and the United States of America was recognized by award and presentation of the Distinguished Service Award of the National Guard Association of the United States shortly before his retirement in December 1972.
